Production Notes for “The Innocent” Pre-Productions and concepts were started early in January 2006 at the Simon Fraser University School for Contemporary Arts facility. Glen Chua pitched his drafted script, became listed as director, and after revisions, a cast was selected specifically by Glen Chua to play the roles in the film. Garrett Blaney and Katherine Blaney were chosen to play the doctor and the young woman, while first time actor Dana Page was asked to play the girl in red. The selection of the cast was especially important, because of the mature and deep context within the film. An artistic decision of shooting the film in both black and white and color negatives was established by Glen before storyboards and shot lists were even completed. Locations were specifically scouted out, and thanks to Dr. Douglas Ng, a clinic set was established. For the beautiful shots with the dock, and the scenes taking place in the mind of the young woman, Glen decided to shoot the scenes at Buntzen Lake, which was the primary location for his earlier film, The Lost. Although there were doubts that Glen Chua would be able to create a film with such a sensitive subject, and a film being so mature, (being that Glen is only 18) shooting for The Innocent began in early February. The first scenes were to be shot at Dr. Douglas Ng’s clinic and next at the lake for two days to complete production. Unfortunately, camera malfunctions during the first day of shoot pushed the production back three weeks. Shooting commenced again in early March until mid March, and the film was then sent straight to Post-Production. On March 31st, the film was completed and sent out to the first film festival, yet the premiere date for The Innocent was not until April 7th, 2006. The premiere date also marked the date of the first premiere for MOONLiTE Productions 4 years ago, with The Lovely Girl (2002).
